TITLE SEQUENCE: THE MESSENGER
Growing up, one of the most influential books I've read is The Messenger by Markus Zusak (same author who wrote The Book Thief). It's a punchy, young adult novel about an underage cab driver sent to do good in a little, idle town; Ed Kennedy lived through a predetermined dead end until he started making meaning from life with the missions he embarks on.
In this project, I created a fictional title sequence for a movie based on this book. The visuals are primarily based on simple motifs and patterns weaved to allude to its story. The emphasis on the playing cards was especially important as it highlighted the recurring key motifs throughout this story. Designing the cards and their following suit were also subtle nods at the gambling culture during the Gatsby era-- a juxtaposition of luxury and class against the reality and grit that comes from the recurrent poker nights Ed has with his friends in a basement.
